The Americans With Disabilities Act ( Ada ) - 1432 Words

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) strictly â€Å"prohibits discrimination and ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, State and local government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities and transportation.†1 This law, enacted in 1990, was created so that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else in society so that they don’t get left behind. The ADA gives civil rights protections to those with disabilities in a similar way to other characteristics that individuals may have, whether it is race, nationality, gender, age and/or religion.2 The ADA is split into five titles, each having a different sect of society they relate to. Title I refers to employment, meaning that employment opportunities and benefits should be equally accessible for people with or without a disability. Title II refers to state and local government, meaning that any governing body must not discriminate against those with disabilities when it comes to programs, activities or services they offer. This portion ensures that architectural barriers to be identified, such as barriers with public transportation systems. Title III refers to public accommodations including privately owned and operated places such as restaurants, hotels, schools, stadiums, etc. These facilities are required to meet minimum specifications when built and existing buildings must remove any barriers that they can in order to accommodate for peopleShow MoreRelatedThe American Disability Act ( Ada )1176 Words   |  5 Pages Disability has been a function historical to justify inequality for any disabled people, but in addition has also helped so many women, and minorities. Computer Memory - 1614 Words

Computer Memory Basics Although memory is technically any form of electronic storage, it is used most often to identify fast, temporary forms of storage. If your computers CPU had to constantly access the hard drive to retrieve every piece of data it needs, it would operate very slowly. When the information is kept in memory, the CPU can access it much more quickly. Most forms of memory are intended to store data temporarily. As you can see in the diagram above, the CPU accesses memory according to a distinct hierarchy. Whether it comes from permanent storage (the hard drive) or input (the keyboard), most data goes in random access memory (RAM) first. The CPU then stores pieces of data it will need to access, often in a cache, and†¦show more content†¦The cheapest form of read/write memory in wide use today is the hard disk. Hard disks provide large quantities of inexpensive, permanent storage. You can buy hard disk space for pennies per megabyte, but it can take a good bit of time (approaching a second) to read a megabyte off a hard disk. Because storage space on a hard disk is so cheap and plentiful, it forms the final stage of a CPUs memory hierarchy, called virtual memory. The next level of the hierarchy is RAM. We discuss RAM in detail in How RAM Works, but several points about RAM are important here. The bit size of a CPU tells you how many bytes of information it can access from RAM at the same time. For example, a 16-bit CPU can process 2 bytes at a time (1 byte = 8 bits, so 16 bits = 2 bytes), and a 64-bit CPU can process 8 bytes at a time. Megahertz (MHz) is a measure of a CPUs processing speed, or clock cycle, in millions per second. So, a 32-bit 800-MHz Pentium III can potentially process 4 bytes simultaneously, 800 million times per second (possibly more based on pipelining)! The goal of the memory system is to meet those requirements. A computers system RAM alone is not fast enough to match the speed of the CPU. That is why you need a cache (discussed later). However, the faster RAM is, the better. Most chips today operate with a cycle rate of 50 to 70 nanoseconds. The read/write speed is typically a function of the type of RAM used, such as DRAM, SDRAM,Show MoreRelatedComputer Memory3238 Words   |  13 PagesComputer Memory 1.Introduction: Just like humans, computers rely a lot on memory. Importance of Greek Burial Free Essays

The Importance of Burial in Greek Religion For the most part, the Greeks did not believe in a different afterlife for the good or bad—i. e. , no heaven or hell. We will write a custom essay sample on Importance of Greek Burial or any similar topic only for you Order Now In their view, the afterlife was almost universally grim; the important detail for the dead was whether they were buried or unburied. Those who did not receive proper funeral rites were doomed to wander by the river Styx, the entrance to the Underworld, for eternity; their souls could never be at rest. Thus, denying burial to a corpse not only insulted the body, but also damned his soul for all time. The buried were granted access to Hades, the name of both the Underworld and its king (who was also known as Pluto). In order for the dead to gain this access, a complicated ritual had to be performed. There were few ‘professional’ undertakers, so a man’s funeral fell to his family, especially the women of the family. They prepared the body for cremation, oversaw the collection of the bones and ashes and burial of the urn, provided the tomb with liquid offerings (libations), and led the mourning, a loud and violent process in which women tore their cheeks with their fingernails, ripped out their hair, and poured dirt over the heads and clothing. Mourning the dead was one of the few things women were allowed to do in ancient Greece, especially Athens. Women of well-born families were expected to stay at home in specially designated women’s quarters at all times except during certain religions festivals. Marriages were arranged by a girl’s father or guardian. Women were not true citizens of the democracy and could not speak or vote in the assembly. They were not even allowed to speak in court, a basic right for Athenian men. Burying and mourning their dead relatives gave women an opportunity to do something important for their families. It brought women to the fore and gave them a role to play. When Creon forbids burial of Polynices, he denies Antigone the chance to do one of the few important things society allowed women to do. Thus, he is attacking her identity, and that is a large part of the reason she opposes his orders. How to cite Importance of Greek Burial, Essay examples
